I Was Born In Romford In 1941.

A Memory of Romford.

We lived at 18 Princes Road, Romford until we came to New Zealand in 1953. I'm not sure how long my parents lived there before I was born, but I presume it was a good long time.
I went to Salisbury Road School, which became Squirrels Heath School. My best friend Rita Fisk lived across the road.
My Dad was a fireman in the war and drove a fire engine in London. His name was Harry Perry and my mother was Alice.
I walked down Victoria Road on a Saturday morning with a bunch of other children going to Saturday morning pictures. I even remember the song we all sang before the films started up. "We are the boys and girls well known as Minors of the ABC, and every Saturday we line up to see the films we like, and shout aloud with glee. We like to laugh and have our singsong, such a happy crowd are we. We're all pals together, we're minors of the ABC".
I remember walking over the railway bridge and watching The Puffing Billy go by.
Many happy outings to Raphael Park to feed the ducks.
My Auntie Vi and Cousin Eve lived in Park Lane, just a short walk away.
My best school friend was Jean Crawford and Anne Keeble was another girl I knew well.
I'm 83 now, but I remember my happy childhood in Romford.
