More about this scene
Another fine church, St Paul's was opened in 1866 for the local Methodist congregation. It cost £8,000 and all of this money was paid by one benefactor, Thomas Hazelhurst. Hazelhurst was a soap manufacturer who was wealthy in his own right and then inherited additional money when his wife died, money that he used to build churches, chapels and schools throughout the area.
