More about this scene
When this picture was taken, Ryton was a pit village in County Durham with no less than five working pits in the immediate vicinity. Now a part of Tyne & Wear, Ryton, like a hundred or more other places, is pitless, though some light industry was attracted to the area. In the background is Holy Cross Church with its unusual broach spire.
