We Emigrated To Australia In 1963 From Sandiacre

A Memory of Sandiacre.

I was about 5 when my mum and dad moved us to Sandiacre from Nth Wingfield around 1955, we Loved our new council house in Coronation Avenue, my grandma and grandad lived in the first house on the corner of Coronation Avenue and Derby Rd, the entrance to the new estate, my brother George was born not long after we moved there, and we loved playing up Stony Clouds when he grew up a bit, my best friend Pat Hull who I lost ALL contact with when we emigrated, I would LOVE to hear any information about her? My big sister Jennifer was Carnival queen, about 1958 I think, and my sister Marie and her made us “twist dresses “ when Chubby Checkers song came out, my dad worked at Taylor’s his name was Jim, my mam was Mary, I used to ride my scooter down Elm Avenue to Mrs. Hemsleys shop, my mam worked there sometimes, we used to go to The Plough pub on a Sunday afternoon in summer, and dad would buy us a bag of crisps and a bottle of “pop” known here in Australia as “soft drink “ ! My grandad was Townsend Chapman, he used to be a police man , my grandma was Ethel Chapman, at one time she was HEAD COOK for the MASTER CUTLER in Sheffield, my brother and I used to LOVE going up CARDBOARD HILL near Stony Clouds and sliding down on cardboard in the summer, and on our sledge in winter, HAPPY, HAPPY memories, I’m now 72, and can still see myself flying down that hill on my sledge!
