Christmas Deliveries: If you placed an order on or before midday on Friday 19th December for Christmas delivery it was despatched before the Royal Mail or Parcel Force deadline and therefore should be received in time for Christmas. Orders placed after midday on Friday 19th December will be delivered in the New Year.

National Service

A Memory of Scarborough.

In 1955 I was posted from Catterick Camp to Burniston Barracks Scarborough. I believe the barracks have now gone.
It was sited on one of the best vantage points, over looking Peasholm Park, the castle, and views towards the harbour. I thought it was the best posting that I had during my two years as a National Serviceman.
The strange thing that I was unaware of at the time, was that my great grandmother was born not far away in Rillington. Now how could a London lad like me have known a thing like that? I may have had relatives close by.
Her name was Anne Blenkin, just in case there are still family members around.

DEAR SIR,

I WAS POSTED TO BURNISTON BARRACKS IN 1958 IN THE ROYAL PIONEERS 260 COMPANY AND WE CLEARED FYLINGDALE MOORS OF SPENT ARTILLERY WITH THE ROYAL ENGINEERS TO MAKE WAY FOR THE NEW EARLY WARNING DOMED BUILDING. I WANT TO TRY AND GET A PHOTOGRAPH OF BURNISTON BARRACKS AND I WOULD BE OBLIGED IF YOU KNOW OF ANYONE WHO MAY THIS.

Hi, I too was completing National Service at burniston barracks as a full corporal and was in fact on fylingdale moor on that very sad day, and recall running across to the scene with all available first aid equipment which we carried. I will never forget the scene and still remember that day particularly I recall a call from my mum checking to see if I was ok after seeing a news report of the incident. I recall a second incident with loss of life relating to one of the lorries in which we were driven to the moor each working day.
My national service started at Wrexham then on to Kineton and finally Scarborough from where I was demobbed in 1959. Regards and keep well.
