This photograph includes the pier and the castle. The castle was certainly being used in the 1870s by volunteer artillery units to conduct firing exercises and gunnery drills. One picture shows a battery comprising an odd assortment of pieces, including a Whitworth rifled field gun and two obsolete muzzle-loading 42-pounders: all in all, a supply officer's nightmare.
