More about this scene

Looking across the green at the airy and spacious village, we see the Old Rectory (left); the tallest of the next three buildings is the old police station and court house, with the White Heifer pub on the right. The Shoulder of Mutton next door became a butcher's, and was later knocked down to give access to a new development. Bennison's Store (right) closed in 1958, and has been a post office and general store ever since. Also in the village is the Hospitaller Order of Saint John of God, formed in Spain in 1539, whose philosophy is to care for those on the margins of society in sickness, disability, poverty and hunger, and those facing death. In 1880 the organisation was invited to take over a 300-year-old private residence in the village; the Roman Catholic brothers continue their invaluable care to this day.

A Selection of Memories from Scorton

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our website to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was, prompted by the photographs in our archive. Here are some from Scorton

Sparked a Memory for you?

If this has sparked a memory, why not share it here?

I was a pupil at this school from 149 to 1951
Stationed at RAF Scorton in the little medical facility which was reached by passing through a farm (I believe). My memory is not good as a result of a stroke. We were lucky to have our own hot water supply as the majority of the camp sites had only cold water. Looking at recent maps, I get the impression that the medical facility is still standing and now presumably used for other purposes.
