Tilshead In The Last Century!

Tilshead was the place where I was born and have lived in for a long time.  It is a quiet village of around 400 or so people.  There was and still is a post office.  There was a pub called The Bell but is now a private ...Read more

Bats/Snow

I lived in a caravan park in Hullbridge 60-64. My memories are of bats that swooped after dark and the year it snowed so bad that the gas froze in the bottles. It started Boxing Day and went on until Easter and we had to leave the van and live with family.

On My Way Into Town Or To Visit My Friend Steve Flanagan

Having lived in the U.S now for 35 years this photo makes me very homesick as I haven't seen the old place since 1972!  I remember walking down Lord Mayor's Walk and turning the corner next to the ...Read more

Art Exhibition, Old Portsmouth.

My grandparents Bert & Dorrie Hedger started this amature exhibition in about 1965, and carried on until my grandfather died in 1982. I recognise several of the paintings as being by my mum Rita Grant, as I was taken down there every weekend from the age of three.

The Old School House

In the early 60's the Old School House was used as the school art room. The sign on the right of the photograph belongs to a cafe known to pupils as "The Hags". When we had pocket money it was a treat to go to the Hags for hot buttered toast.

Barkingside Library

The library was adjacent to the swimming baths where I swam regularly. I understand that the glass in the library "beacon" needed to be replaced in favour of heat-deterring glass. But before that happened it could get stifflingly hot!

Barrel Organ

The island in the middle of Market Place had a unique feature. Between the two zebra crossings on the island each Saturday was a man with a barrel organ. The music could be heard all over the town centre. You had to walk past it when you ...Read more

57 Pickhurst Park

My family moved here, to no. 57, just beyond the tree on the right, a year after the photo was taken.  At the time of the photo the houses were still being built (ours was probably not yet up), to the right (in the wedge with ...Read more

Back In 1963

I was moved to Wickford with my family in December 1963, a hard winter, removal van had trouble getting up the unmade road. Coming from London, it was a bit of a sleepy village for me and especially for my teenage siblings. Had to wait ...Read more
