This is one of Newbury's most attractive streets, Northbrook Street, depicted at the beginning of the 1960s.
This comfortable pub, once an inn, lies under Hurstbourne Hill on what was the Andover turnpike to Newbury. It was near here that William Cobbett stayed with Joseph Blount at Rookery Farm.
This delightful stretch of towpath, with its lines of quaint cottages and period houses, is where the Kennet & Avon Canal enters Newbury on its way to meet the Thames at Reading.
The Tudor Café, seen on the left, was a popular attraction with a great many of Newbury's citizens as well as large numbers of visitors to the town.
This is now the busy A329, and the B4009 Newbury road is between the Bull at Streatley pub on the left, where the Three Men in a Boat lunched, and the Georgian Elm House beyond.
The original Town Hall building in Newbury dated back to 1742 and included a part known as the 'shambles'. This was used by stall holders for the sale of their wares.
This peaceful unmetalled street is now the busy A329; the B4009 Newbury road emerges between the Bull at Streatley public house on the left and the Georgian Elm House just beyond.
To the north of Newbury, on the edge of the downs, lies Hampstead Norris, surrounded by hills and woodland.

They began a local business, and in 1939 transferred the tapestry workshop to Cambridge, leaving the metalwork in the hands of local craftsmen, Olney and Newbury.
The original protestors were veterans of the Twyford Down and Newbury Bypass campaigns, and moved out once plans for the relief road had been withdrawn.
