When I Was Very Young.
A Memory of Sefton.
When I was very young, we lived in Givenchy House (now court) Aigburth Road, we moved there from 13 Auburn Road Liverpool. I remember the flat seemed so big and going to the shops was an adventure. There was the hard ware shop were you bought malt vinegar , you took your own bottle and the shopkeeper filled the bottle or jug from great big barrels of vinegar. The smell!!! I can still smell it now just thinking back. There were lots of shops then and we would walk to Sefton Park when the weather was fine. My first school was St Michaels infants and junior school which had an outside toilet block - the first toilet was very smelly as it was one of the old fashioned ones that did not flush with a hole in a bench type seat. (sounds prehistoric now). Mum had a green mangle to get the water out of the washing and I often got my fingers caught in the rubber rollers. I remember seeing the milk man walking along carrying bottles of milk and the horse and cart lumbering yards behind him. Then we had dustbin lorries pulled by horse and the rag 'n' bone man. My job was to follow these horses round with a bucket and shovel. Good for the roses my Nan would say, Bless her!!

The Molyneux family were the Earls of Sefton (of Croxteth Hall Park too) & in 1867 the then Earl of Sefton gave the Council £250,000 for the purchase of 375 acres (1.52 km2) of land for the development of the park. as a thank you clearly they named it after him, as you would for a quarter of a million!
