Downshall Primary And Secondary Schools

A Memory of Seven Kings.

I have fond memories of both upper and lower schools. Mr Nutting was headmaster of the Junior School and Mr Quinn the secondary School, both very different in their character. Mrs Cooke, Miss Anderson, Miss Barton and Mr Davies were among my favourites at Junior School and I used to visit for many years after I had left school and moved away. I was at Secondary school between 1964 and 1970 having stayed on for the 6th form. So many names spring to mind, Mr Crisp (History), Mr Smidmore (Science) both Miss and Mrs Howe (Needlework andTyping respectively) Miss Addiscott (PE) Jennifer Bateman who inspired my love of music and singing and especially a new Maths teacher who had many a girl swooning at his over six foot, slender frame - John Bottomley. At the the time I lived in the Park Lodge in Aldborough Road as my Dad was area supervisor for parks and recreation for Redbridge. As he was somewhat Victorian in his outlook, I was never able to make friends at school - they would never be allowed home and I was certainly never allowed round anyone's house. That said, I enjoyed my time at both schools and it was a sad day when the Secondary School was demolished.

Hello Phillip
I went to Downshall Secondary from about 1967 to 1972. I remember the school did look like something from Charles Dickens. My parents migrated from South Africa to the UK. I lived in Mafeking Ave and my brother and I walked to school up Kimberly Ave I think and then along Aldborough St or High st.teachers that spring to mind are Mr Crisp Miss Tin Miss Addiscot Mr Thunder Mr Graham(I think) Mr Qinn the head master and Miss Quinn maths teacher. I migrated to Australia 1973 with my family and have lived in South Australia and Victoria. I remember some fellow pupils Keith Tyrrell Peter Wood Keith Clarke Erling Hagland to name just a few the memory does get a bit rusty these days. I had some wonderful days in the UK and Downshall. I often wonder where the fellow pupils have got to. I have been able to contact and meet Keith Tyrrell and his wife here in Australia when they were on holiday one year and it was a great reunion. I do remember a Phillip in our group of friends but I am not sure if this was/is you. But anyway just great to read and remember my time at Downshall. Wishing you a good and healthy life. Mark.
