The Cross 1899. Five miles east of Wells in the eastern Mendips, Shepton Mallet was a prosperous wool manufacturing town, which declined when northern England's Industrial Revolution got under way. The fine market cross at the entrance to the Market Place has an elaborate medieval polygonal centre, with three storeys of arched niches; the crocketed pinnacle emerges from a plainer arched surrounding structure of about 1700 (all was rebuilt in 1841).

Working On A Farm, 1970's, Shepton Mallet.
After leaving school in the late '70's, I went to Strode College in Street. During that time, I was offered a weekend job on Swain's Farm, on the outskirts of Shepton Mallet. I had been at school with his daughter, Lesley, who intended to become a vet. Weekend Walks
As a young lad, living in Shepton Mallet, I used to eagerly await my older brother's visits at weekends. Saturdays would often involve a walk to Wells & a matinee at the Regal. If there wasn't a film on we wanted - or I was old enough to see - we'd usually go for a long walk. I was tremendously excited to hear we were going to see a real castle! Behind Princes Road
I kept looking at this photo & wondering why it seemed a familiar view...Then, with the aid of maps & old pictures realised it was taken from the field (Barren Down?) behind my old school, Ivey House. On the right of the picture is the old Hospital, & you can make out the church of St Peters & St Paul in the middle distance. The wall you can see is of the back gardens of the houses in ...see more

A Life Changing Experience, 1970.
The photo of the Market Cross takes me back to two memories, of 1970 & 1975. On & off, I lived on the Hillmead estate from the '60's to late '70's. June 1970 - the town is full of young people, with long hair. Noisy motorcycles - mostly British - go round the Cross. Despite over 20 years’ work on the archive, these scans have still not been individually checked and may prove to be damaged, faded, or not of sufficient quality to ever be offered in our full product range. However, if you would particularly like to buy one of these please get in touch quoting the Frith negative number,(s) the town name and size of print you would like to buy. On receipt of your enquiry our archivist will check the scan and advise you if the quality is good enough.

What is an Album?

An album is a way to save a selection of Frith photos, maps and memories that are of interest to you.

Creating an Album enables you to make short lists and then make a final selection from the album. In particular it makes ordering things like calendars much easier - simply create an Album of the 12 photos you like and then use the Album when placng your order - our order process will give you this option.

You can create as many Albums as you want, so perhaps make one for your hometown, where you live now, where your parents live now etc.
