Memories Of Skelmersdale 1973

A Memory of Skelmersdale.

I taught at Glenburn High School, Skelmersdale in 1973.

I found lodgings with Mrs Smith, a retired lady, in a terraced house in High Street, Old Skelmersdale on the basis of bed and breakfast plus evening meal. While working in the town I met a Doctor Bell.

Glenburn High School had about 1,200 pupils, a new mixed comprehensive
with about sixty staff, purpose - built to serve the New Town. It shared a
campus with West Bank and the two schools had a joint sixth form. In the
centre of the campus was a meeting area which contained a youth club. At
lunchtime the pupils from the two schools could mingle and go into the youth
club. Consequently by the afternoon many of the children had been roused
into an almost unteachable state. On one occasion, as a lunchtime diversion,
two youths who I taught borrowed a dumper truck being used by
builders nearby. One drove the vehicle with the other in the tipper, pursued
by angry workers.
