Memories Of Skelmersdale 1973

A Memory of Skelmersdale.

I taught at Glenburn High School, Skelmersdale in 1973.

I found lodgings with Mrs Smith, a retired lady, in a terraced house in High Street, Old Skelmersdale on the basis of bed and breakfast plus evening meal. While working in the town I met a Doctor Bell.

Glenburn High School had about 1,200 pupils, a new mixed comprehensive
with about sixty staff, purpose - built to serve the New Town. It shared a
campus with West Bank and the two schools had a joint sixth form. In the
centre of the campus was a meeting area which contained a youth club. At
lunchtime the pupils from the two schools could mingle and go into the youth
club. Consequently by the afternoon many of the children had been roused
into an almost unteachable state. On one occasion, as a lunchtime diversion,
two youths who I taught borrowed a dumper truck being used by
builders nearby. One drove the vehicle with the other in the tipper, pursued
by angry workers.

I remember this vaguely.
I was a pupil at West bank up to 1975 a lot of crazy things happened between west bank and glenburn for some daft reason neither liked each other even though out of school the lads were good friends totally mad at the time as I say crazy times to be a school boy especially if you didn't achieve good grades I personally didn't like my school days being one of the disfunctional pupils as we were branded (wrongly I might add) I know quite a few of my school friends have done pretty good after leaving west bank to me I couldn't wait to leave school and skem but was sad to see and hear about west bank being demolished I left skem at 18 although my family still live in skem.
I still regard it as home.kev bushrod
i remember well my days at glenburn high school fantastic sports days , as a member of boufourt house teams we won basket ball, swimming, five-a-side, badmington and finally athletics. especially the athletics, 1500m when the lad was in last place into the last lap and produced a blistering last 400m to blow every one away was spectacular. The same lad lifted the trophoy at the end. dave fisher
