The Oval

A Memory of South Hylton.

My name doesn't realy matter however I was born in King Edward road in 1973 !, the oval and claxey Rock was my playground ,,,l had a lot of good mates and relatives in and around the oval we would play curbs , tiggy , hidey , with the likes of the barrellas the dorrans, kemp, qwallies, the dobsons , good times ...everybody had the same , People would sit on there doorsteps till all hours .Sheila batty would be watching from the window to see who was coming into the oval even today I use that phrase if partner looking out of front room window , We played from morning till night and only going in for summit to eat if we were lucky enough if not a bag of crisps and a biscuit whatever we did have was shared ,, but looking back now with me having my own kids I relise that it was us that had a true childhood not been afraid of the cold it didn't matter if it was rain or shine we played out not like the kids now who can't even light a fire , climb a tree , go for bike rides my childhood seemed hard but in reality it was sweet, parents didn't really give a xxxx but hey ho , I try to tell my kids what it was like but they not interested only x box interests them now ,,,,,, my god how I miss them innocent days we knew nothing and didn't really need anything just an imagination , a ball, and off we went my friend who lived in number 3 King Edward road I miss if he ever reads this then he should know who I am ................. Today I went back to see it ,,, it's gone I stood in the very place where nelly barrella lived and looked at the little power house next to Billy areils house was we used to climb on that little power house ..........today's date is the 30/01/2019. Wish I could go back and live just one day in them times

Billy Aerial, theres a name I haven't heard in a long time, lived with his mum maud, used to sit on the house roof at times hence the nickname.Sheila Batty was a total legend, great lady, hope she is still in good health and keeping an eye on the neighbourhood wherever she now resides.Sadly the oval is long gone,a dim and distant memory.
