Common Road Infant And Junior School

A Memory of South Kirkby.

I attended this school from 1962 to 1970, living in First Avenue, South Kirkby.
Infants was a lovely time with motherly teachers, afternoon naps and lots of play. Mrs Stewart was the head - she was stern but fair.

The juniors was where you encountered more discipline and men teachers, Mr Thorpe was head at the time.
Then there was Mr Smeaton with lots of knowledge about the environment and nature, sewing lessons with his wife Mrs Smeaton (always being careful never to mess up the embroidery threads)! Cookery lessons with Mrs Bamford and french lessons (oooh la la) with a lady teacher who's name escapes me. Mr Westwood took us for maths and although never my happiest hour, he was kind to us dunces.
By the last year we were all grown up and ready for high school, and soon wishing we were back at good old Common Road again!!
