Orchard Road
A Memory of South Ockendon.
We moved from the East End of London in 1955 to Orchard Road. The road had few cars then and we had a nice garden and the railway at the end. Lots of children lived in the road so it was easy to make friends. The Hobbs boys, Jimmy Rolf, Roger Hicks, Linda Monk and many more.. I often wonder where they all are. We went to Mardyke School, which was very new at that time, all bright and open with a big playing field. A far cry from the one that I had been to at the end of Senrab Street in London. We then moved on to the wonderful Gains in Upminster, a great school; I had a look at it last year still looks good. But all that changed in 1963 when we moved to Gainsborough in Lincolnshire. It's nice here but I still have the fond memories of you all and wonder what you are all doing?

Having been born at 84 Orchard Road in 1948 and now living just 300 yards away in Oaklands drive (no.11) one might have thought life has been rather unfulfilled but nothing could be farther from the truth. After leaving school in 1963 (Culverhouse boys) I started work in the city as a messenger for a tea brokers handling tea samples and taking prices in the London Tea Auction in Mincing Lane. I can remember a visit from the careers officer at school when I remarked I would like a job with some travel. Travel , he retorted, companies don't pay you to travel! That was some 54 years ago and my initial messenger job led me to become a tea taster travelling to India, Bangladesh, Kenya and Malawi as well as the USA and Canada not to mention Europe of course. I often smile at the Lords sense of humour when I think of what that careers officer said. Anyway, that's getting away from memories of south ockendon and the railway at the bottom of my garden. The service now vastly different with direct wins to London, fenchurch st being only 32 minutes away. I mentioned The Lord earlier for when I was 19 and still living at home I became a Christian through a friend at work and became involved at the little chapel opposite the library known as Belhus Park Chapel, and it is there that I am a member and church secretary amongst other roles along with many of my family and of course my wife of 48 years (as at 2017) who I met at the Chapel who lived in Eskley gardens (Barbara Mallett) We have seen lots of changes in South Ockendon of course and the photos bring back many memories.
