National Service
A Memory of South Tidworth.
I was stationed at Tidworth from 1960 till 1962 at Jellalabad Barracks with the Duke of Edinburgh's Royal Regiment.
I was in the M T Section so travelled about Salisbury Plain. I can remember the Daily Express horse trials that were held for the two years that i was there, it always rained. Most of the national service solders came from the Midlands (Birmingham Coventry and Worcester) i was in the last draft but one to do national service. I can remember the Silver Star Coach Company that ran coach services for weekend leave, they ran as far north as Newcastle on Tyne on Friday afternoon only to get back to Tidworth in the early hours of Monday morning. We traveled through Tidworth last August (2017) and were surprised how the place had changed from when i was there. But i still have fond memories of the place, and its surrounding area John Allbutt
