This charming but puzzling picture shows three women in a harvest field, wearing shawls and hats. What is the woman on the right holding? The corn has obviously been cut by hand and piled into small stacks to dry before threshing. But why was it not bundled neatly into stooks? The crop growing on the left appears to be reed.
