More about this scene

In this view we can see the squat tower and castellated wing designed by George Devey for Lord Dunraven and built in 1886-88. Lord Dunraven spent much of his time on his estate at Adare, Ireland, and it was while he was on a trip to see his lordship that Devey died after contracting a chill. Devey's assistant Isaac Williams took over the project, though the work continued to be based on Devey's sketches.

Cherished Memories
My mother, Nancy Owen, was born at 'Slon Cottage' in 1906. Her father, John Richard Owen, worked for the Booker family of Slon. The Bookers originated from Velindre House, Cardiff. Nancy Owen's mother was Mary Ann Owen (nee Cosby) of Merthyr Mawr. She met her husband to be, John Richard Owen, when she was postmistress of the Post Office at Merthyr Mawr and he, John Richard Owen, worked for the Nicholl ...see more

The Ferns
The Ferns was my grandparents' house during the late 1950s - 1960s.  Their surname was Edwards. (Ellen and Lewis.) My mother (Anne) spent many happy times here. I wish they were still here to share these photos with but unfortunately my nan died on New Year's Eve 2008 and my mum 3 years ago.  My mother used to say she was in the top floor with the window to the side of the house and this room gave rise to her phobia ...see more

Dunraven Hotel
When my father joined us from London after the war he went to work in the Hotel and I have a photo of him looking smart in his uniform. The Hotel was altered eventually and became the Sunshine home for the Blind for a while I think.

Southerndown Villas
I feel that the house on the right was called 'The Ferns'. My family and I were evacuated to Southerndown in 1944 and after staying in one big building near the Three Golden Cups, were moved to the upstairs of ;The Ferns'. Despite over 20 years’ work on the archive, these scans have still not been individually checked and may prove to be damaged, faded, or not of sufficient quality to ever be offered in our full product range. However, if you would particularly like to buy one of these please get in touch quoting the Frith negative number,(s) the town name and size of print you would like to buy. On receipt of your enquiry our archivist will check the scan and advise you if the quality is good enough.

What is an Album?

An album is a way to save a selection of Frith photos, maps and memories that are of interest to you.

Creating an Album enables you to make short lists and then make a final selection from the album. In particular it makes ordering things like calendars much easier - simply create an Album of the 12 photos you like and then use the Album when placng your order - our order process will give you this option.

You can create as many Albums as you want, so perhaps make one for your hometown, where you live now, where your parents live now etc.
