More about this scene
A rare surviving example of an English belfry, the Clock Tower, built in 1411, stands at the centre of the city with the narrow mediaeval street of French Row on its left and the wider Market Place on its right. The gilt-lettered Red Lion Hotel proudly proclaims its newly-acquired garage facility, while a few doors along this side of the street, next to the over-hanging storeys, is the restored 15th-century Fleur de Lys inn, reputedly named after King John of France who was imprisoned here after the Battle of Poitiers in 1356.
