St Ives, The Beach 1901

More about this scene
Porthminster Beach, almost in the town and just below the railway station, was extremely popular even a century ago. The crowd appears to be there for an event - perhaps a Sunday-school outing. The late Victorian dresses are not the best garb for the beach. The pilchard fishing boats drawn up are a reminder that this was a working beach too.
