Saturday Morning Pictures!

A Memory of Staines.

Anyone remember queuing up for Saturday morning pictures? The queues were long and we all looked forward to the exciting serial with cliff hanger ending each week, cowboys like Roy Rogers and Hopalong Cassidy, cartoons like Bugs Bunny and the escapades of the children in 'Our Gang'. I think in those days Staines had three cinemas; The Regal, The Majestic and another one, commonly known as The Fleapit. A great way to get rid of your kids for a couple of hours while you did the shopping - even really little ones were allowed in on their own!

Sent you a message Chris.
I remember the tax office was in Majestic House. I pressume this was on the site of the old cinema.
Hi Nick - thanks for your message. I don't remember getting badges but I think I remember singing happy birthday. Another memory - kids lobbing sweets down from the balcony. Were children really allowed to sit in the front row of the balcony on their own or am I imagining it? The cinema by the river was the Regal and I guess you are right about the Majestic being on the site of the tax office. Where was the other cinema? I seem to remember it being quite small and in the middle of the High Street. We called it The Fleapit but I think it was called The Empire. I only remember going once but it was pretty scruffy. Half of the front row of seats had fallen down.
The empire was the name of the flea pit garybaldi pub and next to iron bridge and tea stall.
The Regal was the Saturday morning one , 3 old pence to get in I used to get sixpence the my bus fare to Staines and back,we used to walk and buy sweets with the bus fare.
