During The War

A Memory of Stalbridge.

My grandparents ran The Red Lion, in Stalbridge for Hall and Woodhouse, which is now flats. My father, who was American and was based nr Stalbridge, would drink in the Red Lion with the actor Jackie Cogan or Uncle Fester from The Adams Family. My mother and father got married in Stalbridge church. A little bit of history for you.

Dear Susan,
I met your father Dr David Miller when I was Director SCF in Nigeria (1969-1971) and he spoke about looking after his father-in-law, Albert Schweitzer, in Lamberene. It was all fascinating for me as I had just finished studying theology at Durham and The Quest for the Historical Jesus was an influential book. Today I have been preparing a lecture on 'Jesus the Teacher' which I am giving tomorrow in Beauly, Inverness-shire, and I had recourse to google to check a few facts. A trip down memory lane led me to your father's obituary. I very much enjoyed his company and his realistic enthusiasm. Seeing that you were in England, I thought it would be good to say 'hi' as some would say! I am now a 76 year old Roman Catholic priest, still thinking and enjoying theology. I read everything I could about your grand-father- his Mysticism of Paul the Apostle has been very influential. hope this reaches you. all good wishes,
aye
