More about this scene
Very close to Junction 19 on the M1 motorway, the village is unremarkable. The church is of the 13th century, but more interesting is the altar tomb to William Staresmore, its mid l8th- century vicar, who died falling into his pond; his will included 200 pickaxes, 240 razors, and 500 pairs of boots - eccentric or what? The photograph shows one of several good 18th-century brick houses to be found in the village. The 1930s saw the demolition of a number of picturesque cottages to make way for less attractive replacements, particularly in Fir Tree Lane, once called Dog Lane.
