Great and Little Stanmore are situated close to the Hertfordshire border, and it is to the rising ground above the present village that the visitor needs to look for semi-rural quality. Up here is Bentley Priory, remodelled by Sir John Soane in the late 18th century, where Queen Adelaide died in 1849; here, too, is Stanmore Hall, a remarkable ragstone building which until a great conflagration in 1979 housed a sumptuous William Morris interior. At the foot of the hill the Old Church and St John the Evangelist share a single churchyard, while remnants of the original mediaeval parish church can be found to the south.
