Early Life In Stenalees

A Memory of Stenalees.

I was born in Stenalees in 1954 and my family and I lived in Singlerose Terrace, until we moved to Australia in 1967 - I moved back to the UK in 2008.

My Dad (Donald Woolcock) had a fantastic garden and we grew all sorts of veg, along with keeping chickens and ducks and Mum (Ruby Moore) and Dad kept goats on the 'Downs'.

My sister Trudy and I often played up the 'Downs' or at the park ( I remember my friend Karen's Granddad (Mr Tucker) lived beside the park and often coming out to say hello) and her dad (Aubrey Tucker) was the local butcher and had his shop in Lower Stenalees. My sister and I were known as 'Cock Robin's' daughters.

Picking earts (whortleberries) along Band Lane was great family fun on a Sunday afternoon when they were in season.

Ron Moore was our Uncle and lived beside John Hickling garage, sadly he and my Aunt are no longer with us, but his son Michael and family still live in Stenalees.

Fond memories of our next door neighbours Millie & Ern Stephens (Aunty Minnie and Uncle Ern) and their son John, Mr & Mrs Ball (their son bought our old house - can't remember if it was Michael or Malcolm) and Mr & Mrs Pink were other neighbours. I can still remember Trudy and I collecting old newspapers to 'stuff' our homemade Guy Fawkes for bonfire night from the neighbours or going around the neighbourhood selling mackerel when Dad went out fishing.

Attending the Methodist church for Sunday School and then afternoon tea at our Great Aunty and Uncle (Annie and Wilfred Crago).

Miss Borlase was our teacher at primary school, who later married Mr Bennetto who was Head Teacher at Treverbyn Middle School.

So many great memories! sadly my sister Trudy passed away several years ago but really looking forward to showing my twin sister's Penny and Petula, Stenalees amongst other places, when they visit in September 2015.

I remember Penny and Petula! I'm sure they were in my class at Treverbyn. I was born in Stenalees - well in Redruth hospital, in 1962. We lived on Caudledown Lane Burnett's shop and dairy was on the corner. I used to walk to school along the old railway line - there was a good hedge there that was good for picking earts. I'm trying to remember my teachers. I remember Miss Borlase but she didn't teach me. She taught my sister Debenie though. I remember Miss Bocock and in the juniors, Mr Dunn, Mr Hunkin and of course Freddie Benetton the headmaster.
