More about this scene

This place was once a bustling wool centre, but it has not grown much since. When Daniel Defoe visited, there were 20,000 sheep being sold here. This view shows the west end of the Market Square. Several routes enter town, but none disturb this pretty square. A couple , probably visitors, admire the old market cross. The pinnacled 15th-century tower of St Edward's peeps up over the roof tops. The church was restored in the 1680s after being used to house prisoners during the Civil War; it was declared ruinous in 1657.

Stow Church Wedding, 29th September 1695
My relatives lived in Stow in the 1600's. George Churm married Anne Spurrior on the 29 Sept 1695 at Stow Church. George's father, George, was born at Stow in 1630; his father Lawrence was born in 1600 and married Anne(?) at Stow Church in 1620. Please contact me if you have any further info into the Churm, Spurrior ,Lawrence , Cairn or Webb families of Stow or Wyck Rissington.

However, if you would particularly like to buy one of these please get in touch quoting the Frith negative number,(s) the town name and size of print you would like to buy. On receipt of your enquiry our archivist will check the scan and advise you if the quality is good enough.

What is an Album?

An album is a way to save a selection of Frith photos, maps and memories that are of interest to you.

Creating an Album enables you to make short lists and then make a final selection from the album. In particular it makes ordering things like calendars much easier - simply create an Album of the 12 photos you like and then use the Album when placng your order - our order process will give you this option.

You can create as many Albums as you want, so perhaps make one for your hometown, where you live now, where your parents live now etc.
