More about this scene
Thatched roofs, leaded windows, local stone and a profusion of creepers and roses, set amid lofty trees, make this scene an archetypal image of countryside tranquillity. Even at the turn of the 19th century it must have struck a chord with visitors escaping from noisy, crowded Victorian cities and, as a holiday postcard or as a souvenir, proved immensely popular.
