More about this scene
This was established in 1894, and a bridge was constructed from Little Fullingpit Meadow. Chestnut trees were planted to soften the outline of the semi-circular area, and there were changing cubicles and two springboards. Mixed bathing (even for children) was forbidden. Canvas and metal screens were erected to block the view from the meadows. Children were taught to swim in the shallow area in front of the bar, held up by a harness and rope by the instructor. Then they were allowed to swim beyond the bar and eventually up river. Owing to health problems the complex closed in 1936, to be replaced by Newton Road Baths in 1939.
