Swanage, The Globe 1892

More about this scene
Newly-built Durlston Castle (top left) and the 40-ton Great Globe, also dating from 1887, are seen here from the south-east. The 'Sahara Desert' and 'Soudan' are writ large with 'Arabia' across the Red Sea. George Burt's three-dimensional educational extravaganza goes on to enlighten visitors with cosmic sizes and distances, scriptural and poetical quotations, and the fact that they are standing 'Above sea 136 feet'.
