This was yet another popular spot with smugglers, who often ensured the silence of the local parson with the odd cask of brandy. Just visible on the open ground to the right of the church is one of the end markers of the measured nautical mile used once by ships undergoing sea trials; the other end marker is half a mile before Looe.
