More about this scene
The Normans built a wooden motte and bailey castle at Tamworth soon after the conquest on the site of the Mercian fortifications of 913, but this was replaced by the shell-keep and tower that still stand. By the mid-16th century much of the castle is said to have been in ruins, though some construction work was done at this time, including the superb banqueting hall. The castle was sold to the corporation in 1897 by the 5th Marquess of Townsend. The gatehouse seen here dates from the 13th century.
