More about this scene
The Buttertubs Pass leads dramatically down to this village, which is 9 miles west of Muker. It was hit by a natural disaster in 1898, the result of a cloud burst. The Cathole Inn closed in 1954, just ahead of the motoring revolution, although this car driver (centre left), inspecting a puncture, is hoping for a passing bus. A shooting lodge became the Youth Hostel and later housed the post office.
