Barr Farm

A Memory of Twechar.

I owned Barr Farm for twelve years, and poured my heart and soul into that building, the views from our living room out across the canal to the Campsie Fells was beautiful. The Antonine wall ran through my garden, once an Italian couple walking up the hill asked me if I could tell them where the wall was !, I think they thought it was still visible, I said 'walk no further', I will show you it....

Twechar was a brilliant place to live and the people are great, Willie and Elizabeth Stark in particular were friendly and welcoming, many good nights were had in the Masonic at dances to raise funds for the church.

I've many, many good memories of Twechar and feel privileged to have lived there...

My relatives, the Blairs, were tenants on Barr Farm, in the late 1880s, they also were tenants in Twechar Farm. My father was William Beattie, British weightlifting champion, and Circus strongman, born in 1907 and raised at Twechar Farm, We now live in Perth Western Australia, But have returned to visit several times. I went to school at Twechar Primary in 1944, Cheers Robert Beattie
Yes, I was aware of Willie Beattie’s connection, he was something of a local legend and he is documented in local history.

Barr Farm was built in 1860, it was part of the Whitelaw Estate and the walls were built from stone robbed from the Roman Fort on Bar Hill, so your relatives must have been among the first tenants.

Best wishes........I still miss that house....
My great grandparents James Blair & Jean "Jane" Waugh lived there. c. 1880-1890.
My 2nd great uncle Robert Blair married Jean Beattie c. 1920
