In the distance is East Budleigh's charming old thatched vicarage with its delightful walled garden.
Close to where it discharges into the English Channel at Budleigh Salterton, the Otter passes some old buildings.
Once just a hamlet of fishermen's cottages, Budleigh grew as a town and watering place in the first half of the 19th century, when a number of well-heeled society figures took up residence.
Budleigh's long beach is made up of millions of large pebbles, or 'pobbles', as they are known locally.
Between the church and the neighbouring resort of Budleigh Salterton are miles of clifftop walks and lonelier countryside.
