Lightburn Park
A Memory of Ulverston.
The park cannot have been built long in this photo - our house at the north eastern end of the park was built in 1904 and was bought by the station master of Ulverston at the time. we moved there in 1968 and as we had no garden to speak of the 'Park' was our garden and many a happy hour we spent there. We could squeeze through a gap in the railings and played from morning to sunset when 'Parky' came to lock up swinging his heavy chain at us. We could not afford the tennis courts but enjoyed watching those who could - and the bowling greens were always busy. I think there were at least three F/T gardeners in those days and the summer bedding was beautiful and always full of insect life. One of the groundsman was called 'Tommy Tyson' - It is strange to see it now with its skateboard ramps etc and bowling greens redundant, but i'm glad it has remained a green open space for people to still enjoy.
