More about this scene
The Village, Upton is this quaintly-named road. It leads up to St Mary's, a 19th-century church with its handsome pulpit and a thousand-year-old runic Viking stone in a small showcase. T J Heseltine, the family butchers, is the shop on the left, and next to it is the well known firm of Melias, the confectioners. Rakes Lane goes off to the right. It is said to get its name from Rakes Hall, where gambling and drinking went on.
