Christmas Deliveries: If you placed an order on or before midday on Friday 19th December for Christmas delivery it was despatched before the Royal Mail or Parcel Force deadline and therefore should be received in time for Christmas. Orders placed after midday on Friday 19th December will be delivered in the New Year.

More about this scene

The Kennet & Avon Canal fell into decline after the Second World War. It was the era of the railways that killed it off and for years it was abandoned and completely derelict. However, enthusiasts set about restoring the waterway and eventually they witnessed the fruits of their labours. The canal was officially reopened by HM the Queen in 1990. Today, it is a thriving waterway and an important source of revenue for the local economy.

Newbury Bridge And Lock
This picture makes me feel warm inside. When I was a young boy, 9-11 yrs old, I would fish from the wooden fence in the picture to the lower right, casting under the Newbury Bridge. Hoping to catch a large barbil or Samson the pike that was fed by the butchers on the bridge (Griffins).My name is Paul Frith, born in Portsmouth 21/10/1959. Newbury 1940
My parents ran the Swan Inn in Newtown Village just outside Newbury from 1936 to about 1943, This was before Greenham Common became an American Air Force Base when it was just a Common. Originally Newtown was called Newtown Water because of a river/stream that ran across the road just prior to reaching the Swan. The main road past the Swan was the Winchester Road. Howard Johnson

Tudor Cafe
I remember going to the Tudor Cafe during the War Years in 1940+.I was about 10/11 years old at the time. It always served excellent food even with food being rationed. Toasted tea cakes was one of my favourites! I lived in the nearby village of Newton where my family ran the Ye Swan Inn for a number of years.

Genealogy & Research Images

Despite over 20 years’ work on the archive, these scans have still not been individually checked and may prove to be damaged, faded, or not of sufficient quality to ever be offered in our full product range. However, if you would particularly like to buy one of these please get in touch quoting the Frith negative number,(s) the town name and size of print you would like to buy. On receipt of your enquiry our archivist will check the scan and advise you if the quality is good enough.

What is an Album?

An album is a way to save a selection of Frith photos, maps and memories that are of interest to you.

Creating an Album enables you to make short lists and then make a final selection from the album. In particular it makes ordering things like calendars much easier - simply create an Album of the 12 photos you like and then use the Album when placng your order - our order process will give you this option.

You can create as many Albums as you want, so perhaps make one for your hometown, where you live now, where your parents live now etc.
