For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). I lived at 9 Morton Crescent just after the war. Robert Winston, the well known 'fertiliser' lived across the other side of the roundabout. I went to school at Bowes Road Infants and I remember walking there on my own in 1952 at the age of 5. My sister also went to Bowes Road, but she was 5 years older and went a different way with her friends. I remember the awful smogs and the bonfires by the side of ...see more
Does anyone remember the name of the Pet Shop that was on Aldermans Hill in Plamers Green in the 1970's? It was opposite the train station and had a blue front facade...run by a couple. If anyone can remember the name please post. Your help is very much appreciated.
My maternal grandparents lived in Palmers Green - firstly in Elmdale Road close to what is now the North Circular and then moving to Wentworth Gardens off Hedge Lane. I have many childhood memories of visiting my grandparents and looking around the shops on a Saturday afternoon in the 1970's. We used to cut through the small park at the end of Wentworth Gardens along Hazelwood Lane onto ...see more
I own an AJS motorcycle that was sold when new by Turner Brothers of Palmers Green, Barnet Hill, in March 1954. I hope someone has memories of this outlet, an address maybe, old photographs or brochures would be brilliant. The bike's registration number was 734 AMM any help would be appreciated.
I lived in 75 Russell Road, Palmers Green during the war years and after. Although very young, I remember the doodle-bug coming over our house and landing in Brownlow Road I believe, also picking up the shrapnel near the ARP station at the end of the road. Our neighbours were the Plumbs, Churchills, Crowleys, Rayfields, and all us kids played in the street with no traffic ...see more
Can any one remember an institute in Whinchmorehill? My gran and grandad used to run it. I remember it had high railings and inside was stuffed animals in it - my gran's name was Mrs Fanny Harris, grandad was Mr Harrold Harris. I remember visting them but no one seems to have heard of it. I know it was in the war years - I'm now 75, but would like to know what it was. Thank you, Jill Goddard.
I lived on St Georges Road, went to Walker Primary until 1970 and finally ended up at St Angela's school. The photos reminded me of times that I fear have probably changed in PG, as most other areas in London. Would you believe it once used to be a village! I now live in Norwich and though today I am known by the name I write under, Morgan, my name then was Julie. I remember Evans & Davies ...see more
I lived in Bowes Road from 1980 until 1985, when circumstances meant I had to move away, but I always have good memories of the area, as some of my best times were spent there. I had reason to return recently and I could not take in what I was seeing, with mass destruction everywhere. I lived close to Bowes school, and the entire area has been decimated. I know that this part of New Southgate was under a road ...see more
I lived at 34 Ullerswater Road from 20th January 1963 till March 1980 when we moved to Chesterfield when I was 18. My earliest recollection was of when we went to Broomfield Park to go to the mother and baby clinic that was in Broomfield House. Afterwards, my mum and I went around the museum and then a visit to the cafe afterwards. Then there was Claire's The Bakers on Aldermans Hill, with the sweet shop a few ...see more
My grandmother lived at 50 Old Park Road, opposite Bloomfield Park, and I went to school at Franklin House School in Palmerston Road from 1955 to 1960, then the Winchmore Hill Collegiate School from 1960 to 1962. I used to have sausage and chips in the ABC at the Trianagle and often frequented Bloomfield Park and played football there with my school. Happy memories indeed of Bloomfield House and looking ...see more
