Uxbridge Fc.....Corinthian League Champions!!! 1959/60
A Memory of Uxbridge.
I was born in Alexandra Road just off the Greenway... In 1948. My family had a great passion for
Football...and followed the local REDS home and away. The club in those days had moved from the
RAF camp stadium....to their own ground " Honeycroft" in nearby Cleveland Road.
Having moved to Cowley I went to games with my mates....Alan Morton,Willie Draper( no not Rod Stewart!!!)..and a school friend John Davey. My Dad Tom Woodley was on the Supporters
Club Commitee...for many years.
We could walk to home games....and it was of Dads friends with a car....or the supporters bus for away games.
The club were not serial trophy winners by any means..... The tin of Brasso in the club bar...
was rarely opened.
As the season drew to its' climax in 1960.... against all odds , Uxbridge had remained as title challengers like never before. Great rivals ...Maidenhead United....were the main contenders, but unlike our beloved Reds...were successful in cup competitions....and had to play almost every other day to complete their fixtures in time.
One was these games was at their home ground Yorke Road in late April. A win for Uxbridge and we were nearly there!!! Maidenhead had a classy side....with hard defenders like Arthur Bule...and a super inside forward ..the Pole ...Borgdan Jackubiec! Tough opponents indeed.
We had bundled into a friends' car... and arrived for the 6-30 kick off (no lights in those days)...
to witness a gutsy Uxbridge performance. A brilliant 2-0 win virtually sealed the championship!
With Maidenhead losing again....Uxbridge stepped out at Honeycroft a week later and duly
beat Chesham United 3-0...... to bring the league trophy to that good old town !!
Super players graced those red shirts...... Derek Hoddle, goalie Bill Farlam....and the great
Barry Dunton. Etched in local folklore.
If I close my eyes I can still see them now !!
