More about this scene

The Victorian chain ferry was replaced by a steam ferry, which sank in 1942. The service was revived with a rowing boat after the Second World War. Here the postman with his cycle waits for passengers to disembark so he can deliver mail in Walberswick - a routine which continued into the 1980s. The boatman was Bob Cross, who only handed over to his nephew David Church in 1991.

A Selection of Memories from Walberswick

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our website to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was, prompted by the photographs in our archive. Here are some from Walberswick

Sparked a Memory for you?

If this has sparked a memory, why not share it here?

Walking with Bob my border collie through the salt marshes and dunes. Listening to the birds in the marshes and trying not to get lost! Keeping Bob away from people as he's a very cautious rescued border collie. The sense of peace whenever I have returned here. Now sadly without my dearest brave Bob but always remembered.
