I used to drink there regularly in the 70s with rugby playing friends. Windsor Davies from 'It Aint arf hot Mum' used to drink there too.
I attended Collingwood from 1957 - 1960 and yes, the discipline was severe. I once looked out of the window as a fire engine went by and was punished with 6 of the best! Mr Kirby Birt was an odd character with a viscious streak. They were all scary. I think there was a Mr Maynard who wasn't too bad. I failed my 11 plus but got into Trinity, Croydon. I lived in nearby Harcourt Road. My late grandfather used to mow the grass and prepare it for the annual remembrance parade and open air service. During the hot summers the green would be packed by drinkers from the "Dukes Head" which is in the photo on the right. The green was the centrepiece for a parade of shops, both on Croydon Road and Manor Road. It brought together a small but friendly community, many of ...see more
I lived just behind the Duke's Head from 1945 till the late 60's, and I believe this was where my parents met before World War II. My dad was working as a part time barman and my mother was sent by my grandmother to inform my grandfather, that it was time for him to drink up and get himself home for his tea!
