A Day To Remember

A Memory of Warminster.

Saturday the 8th June 1963 was predicted to be the hottest day of the year thus far. Setting off by coach from Cheltenham were members of a savings club, myself included, bound for Weymouth. Our first stop was for refreshments at the Weymouth Arms in Warminster. This excellent hostelry left such an indelible stamp on my memory (since at the time i was a 17 year old on his first visit to the South Coast) that over the years i've always seemed to have been drawn in some curious fashion not only to the Weymouth Arms, but to Warminster itself. Our stop on the return journey was at the George Inn at Longbridge Deverill, our coach having meandered through a then "B" road to take in the picturesque Dorset / Wiltshire countryside. On that warm summer evening at the George Inn i took time to explore the village, taking in the calm and tranquility.... and wondering if where i was at that moment in time had some kind of significance. Many years later, i learned that a close relation of mine had passed away. At his funeral in Bath, i learned that in the years prior to his death, both he and his wife (my uncle and aunt) had been resident at a care home in Longbridge Deverill. A tablet adjacent to the path which leads to the Church at Longbridge Deverill marks the spot where their ashes were interred. Now, on the occasional pilgrimage i stop to enjoy the hospitality of both the Weymouth Arms and the George Inn.
