Weaverham In The 1940,S
A Memory of Weaverham.
I have a similar tale to as someone also brought here from Liverpool in 1948 when my dad started work for the ICI in Lostock. We lived in Keepers Lane with a view over the Weaver Valley.
We spent lots of happy days in Owely Woods and Hazel Woods making dens brewing tea over an open fire with water from the stream. Hazel Woods was a special favourite as there were as you would expect, hazel trees, which I could do with now as we get squirrels in the garden. Also damson trees which I would collect the fruit and my mum would make pies. I would say thanks with a bunch of irises picked from beside the stream in Hazel Woods.
I went to the local school in Weaverham, I was 8 years old. There was quite a lot of bullying at school because the locals looked down on Scousers so you had a hard time if you couldn't stand up for yourself. The only teacher I can remember is the headmaster, that's because we used to call him the Mecon, from the Eagle comic. I did however find my first true love, her name was Glenys Farr. What became of Glenys?
We came back to Liverpool in 1951 and I eventually became an engineer and travelled the world.
Now retired I often think of Weaverham and what became of all the mates I used to roam the woods with, and Genys.

I'm not sure of the name now, could it have been Weaverham County Council School ? Anyway if you walk towards the village with Owley Woods at your back and about half way through turn left up a hill, the school was on the left, the playgrounds were separated into boys and girls. Behind the school was a large playing field. There was a paper shop at the bottom of the road where I lost my job as a paper boy after one day, because the travelling fair was in the area and I lost complete track of time. I had bought a sit-up-beg bike for sixpence especially for that job too! Do recognise the school from my description ? Do you still live in the area ? Is 1971 your birth date which is a few years after my time there ?
It was a bit of a surprise to hear form someone who read my rose-tinted scribblings it brought back a mixed bag of feelings for me.

Nice to hear from you. The school I went to was called Wallerscote junior school....I know we walked up owley wood road to get there lol! 1971 is not my birth year,I went to weaverham in 1956/7 and we lived in Gleave Rd....have so many fond memories of weaverham and the long summers we spent in the woods..such happy days! Have you ever been back there ?
