Wem is typical of many small country towns serving agricultural communities. In the past it had regular cattle markets and cheese markets, a mill, tanneries and a brewery, but these have now all gone. However, it does have an annual sweet pea festival - the modern hybrid sweet pea was developed here by Henry Eckford in the 1880s.

I too remember the Milk machine outside the shop, and also that in the 1960s Mr Nairn used to come round our area ( by the primary school) in his 'mobile' sweet shop on a Sunday afternoon, he always stood outside his van and rang his brass hand bell to attract attention, it was a lovely sight when he opened the back doors to reveal all the boxes/packs of sweets in the back of it. there was no other place to buy sweets ...see more
My Nan and Grandad (Mabel & Dave Nairn) owned the sweet shop on the left of this picture. The vehicle on the left would be in front of it. I remember the milk machine that stood outside and the grid that the milk machine users would accidently drop their loose change down. I used to do down into the cellar to collect it!
