More about this scene
This is a detail of the chalet zone which sprang up behind the 1897-built Esplanade (right), between the waterworks and the Salt House on Pitfield Marsh (left). This was the site of medieval shipyards which were still in production into late Victorian times and launched their largest vessel, the 1,002-ton ‘Speedy’ for the Australia run, in 1853. Beyond, beside the George Hotel, the River Brit flows into the Basin and through the narrow Channel created between the West Pier and East Pier which project together into Lyme Bay (right). Beyond are vertical sandy strata, forming East Cliff and Burton Cliff.
