In the late 60s / early 70s, a freezer place open nearby and there were large pieces of polystyrene from the freezers that naughty local kids would use as rafts to paddle up the Welsh Harp from the bridge on the Edgware Road, and help themselves to drinks from the Schweppes lorries that had been loaded up for the next day's deliveries. Sabre must have chased quite a few of them!
Lol...I was one of them naughty Boys and the freezer place was Bejams. Lived in Hyde Crescent and played on the Welsh Harp exactly as you say. Polystyrene rafts, climbing bottle mountain behind schweppes and the only thing on the trucks were sparkling water and Newcastle brown Ale; not really suitable for an 11yr old. Worked at the Hyde open air pool during the summer "on the crates" so I got a free swim.. I remember them draining the West Harp as kids, we would collect old helmets that had been thrown in after the war. Twice I was pulled from there after getting stuck in the mud, great fun days...
