More about this scene
Constant removal of salt and pumping of brine from the underground salt mines left great underground holes, which then filled with water. Many of these subsequently collapsed to form what are known as 'flashes'. Today those in the countryside hereabouts have become popular centres for watersports. However, under urban areas they have caused subsidence problems; modern buildings need to be built to withstand any potential collapse.
