Withernsea was labelled in 1890 as 'a dreary watering place'. Its ambitions to become a resort after the arrival of the railway in 1854 were slow to come to fruition. However, eventually many substantial houses and a pier were built. Here we see donkeys lined up ready to delight the children.

My sister Annette and I have just been sharing memories of this place, before it become Teddys club. We got to go in there rarely but remember after the Guide Parades on Remembrance Day, having squash and crisps in there. Very exciting!
Some of my happiest childhood memories are of the holidays the family spent at Withernsea, staying at my Grandmothers caravan. Her name was Clara Peat and my first visit would have been over 60 years ago.
