More about this scene
General View 1890 New Shoreham was a prosperous medieval port with a superb parish church, St Mary de Haura, whose great central tower can be seen in this view. In Victorian times it was still a busy port with a shipbuilding industry, although efforts to turn it into a seaside resort proved unsuccessful. This photograph looks along the Worthing road to the twin towers surmounted by lion statues of the Norfolk Suspension Bridge. Built in 1833 by William Tierney Clarke, whose Marlow and Budapest bridges survive, it was replaced in 1923 and again in 1987. Francis Frith's Sussex A Century Ago
